Samsung Electronics Discuss the Important Role of Energy Efficient Technology and Collaboration at the Trans-Pacific Sustainability Dialogue 2023

On September 14, Samsung Semiconductor participated the 2023 Trans-Pacific Sustainability Dialogue held at Ewha Womans University's ECC Lee Sam-bong Hall. The ‘Trans-Pacific Sustainability Dialogue’ is an annually held event hosted by Stanford University Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APACR)* and the Ban Ki-moon Foundation For a Better Future. The event invites scientist researchers, student leaders, policy makers and practitioners, to discuss, share ideas and look for opportunities to collaborate in order to accelerate progress in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Pursuit of Energy Security with Energy Efficient Technologies and Solutions The second day of the event was an expert session, where participants discussed various topics including energy efficient technologies, economic and political aspects of renewable energy as well as relationship between environment and energy security. Of them, Samsung Semiconductor hosted the panel session on the topic of the “Pursuit of Energy Security with Energy Efficient Technologies and Solutions.” Session moderator Celeste Crystal, Sustainability Lead at Samsung Semiconductor America Memory, opened the session with a short introduction of Samsung Semiconductor’s environmental vision “technology that makes technology sustainable” as well as of the company’s RCS technology and device solutions. Celeste Crystal also highlighted the Samsung’s flash memory and DRAM, built with Samsung Semiconductor’s next-generation process and design technology, that while improving performance capturing power efficiency to maximize energy savings. Moreover, with the low-power chips and technology, Samsung Semiconductor shared its ambition to achieve sustainable goals and make progress.
The session went on to the panel discussion where Amazon Web Services (AWS) Asia-Pacific Head of Energy and Environment Policy Ken Haig, ASML Director of Sustainability Marijn Vervoorn, and Director of the Center for Institutional Innovation at the National Institute of Green Technology Dr. Ji-Hee Son joined Celeste to share and discuss the efforts various stakeholders in the value chain are making to make energy more sustainable.
Following the moderator’s lead, the panels went on to talk and provide various insights for the audience on △the way energy usage in businesses are changing △the importance of energy security and energy efficiency and △the ways the IT industry is working together. Celeste Crystal, who moderated the session, said "It is the first time that Samsung Semiconductor hosted such panel discussion-style dialogue on sustainability working along the academia community" "It was good opportunity to show that Samsung Semiconductors is exercising proactive sustainability leadership in the IT industry and its value chain; from suppliers and industries to public institutions and customers." Celeste went on and said “Samsung Semiconductor continues to look for new technologies and solutions to use energy more efficiently. With the annually released sustainability report, Samsung Semiconductor has shown improvements in renewable energy use and to optimize energy usage and minimize material consumption, it is also setting up internal operation analysis system. One good example is the RCS facility that effectively processes process gas while using relatively less energy than that of other existing process gas treatment facility. Also since joining the RE100 in September of 2022, our efforts to use more renewable energy continues." She ended by saying "At Samsung Semiconductor, we believe that the technology and sustainable practices at Samsung Semiconductors will play a key role in making a sustainable future." Role of Collaboration to Achieve Sustainability Goals And Make Progress in Eco-Conscious Technology A sustainable future is not realizable by one individual effort and so a collective effort by the industry is vital. In particular, industries that demand vast amount of energy, such as the IT industry, need more efficient energy use/management. This forum was an opportunity for Samsung Semiconductor to share the company’s energy efficient technology and its potential to help lead and guide the IT industry on the road to a sustainable future. Samsung Semiconductor will continue to innovate more efficient energy technologies; communicate and cooperate with various stakeholders to lead the IT industry to sustainability. * Stanford University Walter H.
